相傳蘇東坡訪寺，僧初以貌取人，漸知其名而禮數層層升級：由「坐」到「請坐」到「請上坐」，由「茶」到「敬茶」到「敬香茶」。東坡遂書此聯以諷勢利。上聯末「坐」仄、下聯末「茶」平合律；同字遞進，節節相對，諷刺入木三分，是最膾炙人口的趣聯之一。
